in
Biography | The Real Story
Ramonna Tooley brings more than 14 years of communication experience to GroundFloor Media. Her extensive background in a variety of industries – from sports to law enforcement to healthcare – provides a diverse background to the GroundFloor Media team. She has managed major healthcare and consumer accounts at GroundFloor Media, including Starbucks, Coors Light and The Children’s Hospital, and currently provides strategic counsel to all of the firm’s account teams. Ramonna loves to learn about new clients and pitch their stories to the media, having landed coverage in a variety of national, regional and local outlets including Fast Company, Redbook, The New York Times, Sports Business Daily and on “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”
Prior to joining GroundFloor Media, Ramonna was the director of marketing and business development for Swedish Medical Center. At this hospital and Level I trauma center, she handled the media in both proactive and crisis situations on a regular basis, including such notable events as the medical evacuation of Dr. Ronald Shemenski, the physician from the South Pole who underwent emergency surgery at Swedish; and a remarkable young man who was impaled by a 2x4 in an automobile accident and lived to tell about it.
In the late 1990s, Ramonna served as the public information officer for the Lakewood Police Department (LPD), where she handled on-scene media relations, crisis communications and proactive public relations. In her position with LPD, she also assisted other law enforcement agencies in coordinating on-scene media relations during multi-jurisdictional incidents including the shootings at Columbine High School in 1999.
Ramonna’s professional experience also includes six years in amateur sports public relations. As the director of communications and media relations, she handled the promotion and on-site media logistics for local, national and international events for the Indiana Sports Corporation (ISC) in Indianapolis. Such events included the swimming and diving Olympic Trials, various national and collegiate championships and local events. While at ISC, Ramonna helped prepare the bid for and coordinate the relocation of the NCAA headquarters and Hall of Champions to Indianapolis and served on the public relations committee for the 1997 and 2000 NCAA Men’s Final Four. Her sports PR experience also includes working at USA Gymnastics and a variety of international events such as the Olympic Games (Atlanta), Pan American Games (Argentina), Goodwill Games (Russia) and World Basketball Championship (Greece).
Ramonna is a firm believer in professional development having served in a variety of roles, including president, on the board of the Colorado Healthcare Communicators, an organization that also recognized her with its “Communicator of the Year” honor. She also served as president of the Emergency Services Public Information Officers of Colorado and was awarded their “Public Information Officer of the Year” honor. Ramonna remains active in her community by conducting volunteer public relations activities for CASA of Jefferson and Gilpin Counties and serving on the marketing committee for Metro Volunteers.
Originally from Indianapolis, Ramonna received a bachelor’s degree in journalism, specializing in public relations, from Butler University and spent one year studying communication at Murdoch University in Western Australia. Outside of work, she enjoys running, hiking and skiing with her husband, step-twins and their faithful four-legged companion.
Biography | The Real Story
Perfectionism Personified
Ramonna Tooley, a former gymnast and current perfectionist, not only remains double-jointed from her days of bendy battle, but she also clings tightly to that über-competitive nature. Upon college graduation, she began her stint as a gymnastics coach and continues to apply that experience to her leadership style today. For Ramonna, it’s the individuals’ talents and passions that make up the team. So like coaching, her role at GroundFloor Media is to manage all of us, as well as act as our resident psychologist, janitor and mother hen.
To her credit, she’s learned from the best, working with many sports heroes throughout her career. Her favorite of all time was Bela Karolyi, both for his passion and enthusiasm for gymnastics, as well as life in general. In fact, the most pivotal moment of her career was alongside Mr. Karolyi when they appeared together in a “60 Minutes” segment, being chased into an elevator by reporter Leslie Stahl. Watching the elevator door shut on Stahl, Ramonna decided that the world of PR was going to be competitive enough for her to tackle. Plus, now that she’s GroundFloor Media’s crisis expert, she looks back at that day as the turning point in her career – that was the last time she turned away from a crisis! Did we mention that she likes a challenge?
In her spare time (what little she has) she enjoys hiking, training for half marathons, running the stairs at Red Rocks Amphitheatre with her hubby and step-twins, spending time with family and mostly, laughing. The Tooleys and their two dogs live on the side of a mountain just outside of Morrison, Colo. It gets chilly up there, so please, cover your mouth when you sneeze. We need Ramonna to keep up her strength. You never know when she’s going to have to compete next!
