Ashley Cohen brings more than 15 years of PR experience to GFM with a strong focus on national business and trade media relations for clients in the e-commerce, retail, technology and consumer products (including food and beverage) industries. Ashley’s keen organizational skills and straightforward communication tactics have helped lead her clients to the top of their industries and position their executives as acknowledged experts in the top national business outlets. Throughout her career she has cultivated relationships with reporters and editors at the most influential business, consumer, enterprise and trade outlets, including The Wall Street Journal, Reuters, CNBC, Entrepreneur, CNNMoney, Fast Company, Business Insider and CNET.
A self-proclaimed social media junkie, Ashley spearheaded the development of the GFM social media team, which helps clients leverage social media elements such as blogs, social networks and podcasts to further expand their brand outreach and connect with new audiences.
Before joining GFM, Ashley was an account director for 104 West Partners, a Colorado-based high-tech PR agency. While at 104 West, Ashley was responsible for overseeing the strategic direction and tactical execution of the agency’s consumer technology clients, including Webroot Software, one of the leading Internet security developers, and Digital Chocolate, a top mobile gaming publisher founded by gaming pioneer Trip Hawkins.
Before joining 104 West, Ashley served as marketing and communications director for Tehama Sportswear, Clint Eastwood’s luxury sportswear apparel and accessories line. While at Tehama, Ashley was responsible for managing all public relations and direct marketing activities, which included the launch of two successful licensee brands for IZOD and Arnold Palmer. Before joining Tehama, Ashley served as an account executive with Metzger Associates, a high-tech public relations agency, where she helped launch the mobile gaming division of Sprint PCS and worked with business-to-business technology clients such as Schlumberger, CDM Optics and OM Technologies. Ashley also has experience in public affairs, working directly with Colorado’s Secretary of Technology and the U.S. Army’s Office of the Chief of Public Affairs, Community Relations Division.
Originally from Louisville, Ky., Ashley earned a bachelor’s degree, with a concentration in public relations and history, from Indiana University. Ashley lives in Boulder, and in her spare time she enjoys hiking, running, skiing, reading and spending time with her husband and two children.
Biography | The Real Story
Ashley Cohen grew up in Louisville, Ky. And she’s quick to remind us that it’s pronounced “Loo-vull” not “Lewisville,” like the town on Highway 36 in Colorado. It was there, in “Loo-vull,” that young Ashley’s dreams of growing up to be a Lakers Girl, an ER physician or an environmental attorney quickly gave way to her true calling: public relations. For it was there that she first honed her people skills as a hostess at Outback Steakhouse (crikey!).
Shortly thereafter, Ashley, like many of us, thought she’d just try her hand at the world of PR before really committing. So this industrious young lady landed herself an internship with the U.S. Army’s public affairs office at the Pentagon. Pretty impressive!
GFM team members are no strangers to brushes with fame (and even infamy). Just read the other “real stories” to see what we mean. But for Ashley, her first such brush happened on the third day of her U.S. Army internship – the day the Monica Lewinsky scandal broke. Both Monica and Linda Tripp had been working next door to Ashley at the Department of Defense. As you can imagine, Ashley’s bird’s-eye view of that little piece of history helped solidify her decision to pursue a career managing public perception.
But with or without firsthand crisis training, Ashley’s a natural at what she does. She’s extremely organized, with a slight touch of paranoia – ideal qualities for a PR professional.
In addition to working her tail off on a regular basis, she also likes to run, ski, hike, work out, cook, shop, hang out and eat out with friends and family, read Harry Potter books and anything to do with Queen Elizabeth I. She’s also been spotted in line for Star Wars movies. But no, she didn’t dress up. Thanks for asking.
And while Ashley spent a few years working for Clint Eastwood’s apparel line, she actually shares more in common with David Bowie and Christopher Walken. Why? Because like these two superstars, one of her eyes is blue and the other is brown.
At the end of the day, Ashley and her husband like to retreat to the peaceful patio of their foothills home in Boulder. They share it with their two children and the occasional wildlife creature.
So if you want to get on Ashley’s good side, simply send over a bottle of good red wine along with a handwritten note. Who knows – she may just grace you with her “Oreo dance.” And if cloning ever becomes reality and she can pursue her many dreams, look for a few more Ashleys: the innkeeper, the baker, the novelist and the history professor. We’ll keep the original for ourselves.
