Carissa McCabe, APR | Vice President
Biography | The Real Story
Carissa McCabe offers GFM clients more than 15 years of public relations experience with a focus on consumer-facing media; social media; and crisis planning, strategy and execution. At GFM, she has provided strategic counsel to clients including Starbucks Coffee Co., Children's Hospital Colorado, Qdoba Mexican Grill, Saint Joseph Hospital, Earth Balance and Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt, to name a few.
From managing social media interaction with area residents and media during a major hospital move to working with media onsite during the first Special Olympics USA National Games to helping companies navigate communication with key parties during bankruptcy and class-action lawsuits, Carissa enjoys working closely with clients as part of their team.
She also enjoys identifying opportunities to make connections within the community and demonstrated that passion in the winter of 2014 by identifying a need and organizing a city-wide training opportunity utilizing GFM’s Online War Room for Denver-area health care organizations and first responders to test strategies related to responding to a potential health-related catastrophe in Colorado.
Before joining GFM, Carissa was vice president of marketing and communications for Morris Animal Foundation (MAF), the world’s largest private nonprofit foundation focused on veterinary research to improve the health and well-being of companion animals and wildlife. At MAF, Carissa managed a team of employees focused on public relations, Web communications and publication development and distribution as well as veterinary partner programs and fundraising from more than 10,000 sustaining-level donors.
Carissa spent more than eight years with MAF growing the public relations department from a team of three focused solely on public relations to a team of seven. That team successfully leveraged media contacts, constituent publications and direct-mail programs to increase sustaining donations to the organization by more than 10 percent in just six months.
Shortly before joining GFM, Carissa became Accredited in Public Relations (APR). The APR designation is a mark of distinction for public relations professionals who demonstrate their commitment to the profession and to its ethical practice.
Carissa holds a degree in technical journalism with an emphasis in public relations from Colorado State University.
In her spare time, she volunteers at her children's school and truly enjoys cooking for her family. Since becoming a parent, healthy, delicious food has become a passion, and Carissa loves exploring recipes on Pinterest and testing them out in her kitchen!
Biography | The Real Story
Carissa McCabe has spent most of her life in Colorado, with mini-stints in Nebraska, Michigan and Hungary. She’s the daughter of an avid dog trainer, so it’s no surprise that her early career involved working with animals. In fact, before joining the “monkeys” at GFM, she spent eight years working for a foundation that funded research studies to treat and cure diseases in animals. She even has a sister who, in keeping with the family theme, worked as a gorilla keeper at Zoo Atlanta. To this day, Carissa keeps at least one large dog around the house at all times – about all anyone can attempt to handle. Now that she’s got kiddos in the house it’s anyone’s guess what two-, four- or more-legged animals might show up as “pets” on any given day at the McCabes!
In her spare time, Carissa enjoys everything from spending time with her family and hanging out with her friends to reading and bargain hunting. Her friends and co-workers know her as funny, thoughtful and hard-working. She claims the “nerdiest” thing about her is her love of spreadsheets and analytics. She’s also a huge fan of Pinterest and spends at least a few hours each week scanning for new recipes to try, meal planning and then testing out the recipes in her kitchen! She’s modeling good habits – her young kids often serve as sous chefs, and they’re likely to finish off their broccoli before their mac & cheese.
Carissa and her family love to explore the sights around Denver and beyond – but travel has taken on a new twist with two little ones in tow. Nonetheless Carissa remains curious about the world out there and endeavors to explore it whenever she can.
