Jim Licko | Vice President
Biography | The Real Story
With more than a decade of communications experience, Jim Licko brings a wide range of expertise to GFM, including crisis management, consumer public relations, public affairs and social media strategy and implementation. As a former journalist, he has a keen sense for developing successful media strategies and enjoys keeping his hand on the pulse of the ever-changing media industry. GFM utilizes Jim’s skill set on both the Rapid Response and social media teams, developing strategies for clients such as 34 Degrees, Oskar Blues and USA Swimming.
Before joining GFM, Jim worked for Pete Webb Public Relations, where his responsibilities included managing the Colorado Department of Transportation’s statewide “Heat is On” drunk-driving and “Click It or Ticket” seat-belt safety programs and conducting an award-winning launch of The Inn at Auraria student housing facility in downtown Denver. He also tackled crisis situations ranging from land-use issues to complex legislative matters. It wouldn't be out of the ordinary to find Jim, a confirmed multitasker, landing coverage on ESPN Radio in the morning and managing a special district public meeting that same afternoon. During his time at Webb PR, Jim was particularly proud of his work managing media for both the groundbreaking and dedication of the Columbine Memorial, including a visit and remarks from former President Bill Clinton in 2006.
Previously, Jim was vice president of public relations for the integrated marketing firm MCS in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where his account work ranged from crisis communication for Swiss Valley Farms to creating a successful holiday promotion for Dobson Cellular Systems that raised more than $980,000 for local Big Brothers Big Sisters chapters. He started his career as a broadcast news reporter and later a sports reporter/anchor at KWWL-TV in eastern Iowa. Jim credits his time as a reporter for his ability to quickly understand and get up to speed on new client work.
Jim is an active proponent of civic and community volunteerism, donating time and efforts to several Denver-area organizations including the Denver Metro Chamber Leadership Foundation, Youth Opportunity Foundation, Naturally Boulder and Trout Unlimited. He is also a proud graduate of the 2009 Denver Metro Chamber’s Leadership Denver program.
A native Iowan, he holds a bachelor’s degree in electronic media and public relations from Wartburg College.
In his spare time he can be found in the mountains enjoying the numerous outdoor activities of Colorado with his border collie/lab mix and frequenting Coors Field during the summer months.

A Major League Baseball legend in his own mind (and on his left ankle), Jim Licko never quite made it to MVP. No, he had to settle instead for the title MLG since countless friends and colleagues have described him as one of the world’s Most Likeable Guys. Such is life.
So how did this lovable-yet-competitive, list-addicted-yet-laid-back, baseball-fanatic-slash-socialite from a teeny Iowa farm town come to live and work in Denver? Well, after his first “at-bat” building houses, over an end-of-day Old Fashioned (see why he didn’t fit in on the job site?) he decided he could use a little more action – and he hasn’t stopped moving since.
Since relocating to Colorado, Jim has become an avid camper, snowboarder, kayaker, hiker and fly fisherman, and he’s recently discovered a love for rock climbing. A passionate collector of passport stamps (who has time for anything else?), our hero still finds the time to volunteer for the LoDo District, Trout Unlimited and Youth Opportunity Foundation. Oh yeah, and he’s a graduate of Leadership Denver’s 2009 Class, too! But when there is an opening on his Outlook calendar, say “sayonara,” because he’s outta here.
Just as we admit to simply loving the name “Licko,” Licko admits to succumbing to occasional outbursts of impatience. Like when someone walking in front of him in a crowd decides to suddenly stop (hint: Try moving to the side!). But even at his worst, he still manages to do good things. He hopes that will inspire those around him to help others, too – from donating money to charity to just opening a door for someone with their hands full.
Jim shares his passion for playtime with his dog Piper. We’re also hoping that as one of the three PR people in the world who can actually do math, Jim never figures out the number system at the lottery – we think we just might lose him to the land as a state park ranger if that happens. You can take the boy out of the country, but…
