Earlier this week I had a meeting with the boss lady to touch base on accounts. Instead of grabbing coffee or meeting in one of the GroundFloor Media conference rooms, we went for a walk.
I decided to do a little digging into the concept of walking meetings and found a fantastic TEDx Talk with Nilofer Merchant, a business innovator. In the talk, she suggests “a small idea that just might have a big impact on your life and health: Next time you have a one-on-one meeting, make it into a walking meeting — and let ideas flow while you walk and talk.”
And getting out of your chair has additional benefits. Nilofer says we are sitting 9.3 hours per day, which is more than we are sleeping at 7.7 hours. She then makes a bold statement that “sitting has become the smoking of our generation.”
As a working mom, I too have found myself boxed in where I can either take care of my health or take care of my obligations. I am in awe that Nilofer now walks 20 – 30 miles per week via walking meetings. H.E.R.O.
It’s time to shake things up and bring in fresh ideas. It’s time to walk and talk.
