Listed as Outside Magazine’s best place to work in 2015, you might assume that GFM team GFM-Ergonomicsmembers spend a lot of the workday, well, outdoors. While we do love to spend time outside enjoying all our great state of Colorado has to offer, the typical workday inside the GFM office looks just about like any other – sitting at our desks, often with bad posture and a disregard for ergonomics.

Benefits of movement

Recently, we invited Dr. Kati Schwabe from Schwabe Chiropractic to speak to our team about the health hazards of sitting too much and – our larger offense – sitting incorrectly at our desks throughout the day. Here are some of the top takeaways:

  • Move at least once every hour – movement could be as simple as walking to the kitchen for a glass of water or taking a lap around the block, but one hour or more of static posture is bad for the body.
  • Avoid “text neck” – consider how much time you spend looking down every day at your smart phone, iPad, or laptop screen and then figure out how to bring those screens up to eye level to improve posture and save your neck.
  • Drink more water – it goes without saying, but especially during the workday many of us need a reminder to stay hydrated. How much water should you drink? In general, your body weight divided in half is how many ounces you should drink per day.
  • 20/20/20 rule – your body needs a break, but so do your eyes. Follow the 20/20/20 rule, which means every 20 minutes look 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This helps your eyes readjust and gives your neck a break, too!

Action plan

After hearing from Dr. Schwabe we realized that while each individual’s desk could use a tweak or two, we have some great elements in place that we simply need to utilize more to maximize their benefit:

  • Treadmill desk – this article outlines 5 reasons to get a treadmill desk, and we couldn’t agree more! GFM has one dedicated treadmill desk and those who use it swear by the increased productivity and creativity.
  • Balance board – standing and working can be just as dangerous for the body as sitting all day if you stand still on a flat surface. At the suggestion of Dr. Schwabe, GFM added a balance board to the office in late 2015 and it gets used at least once a day to great benefit!
  • Walking meetings – we’ve already got a group who consciously walks the block at least once or twice per day, but following Dr. Schwabe’s presentation and especially now that the weather is getting warmer, we’re planning to take more meetings on the move.
